Tourism and Hospitality Stream (THS)

The Tourism and Hospitality Stream is pathway under the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) designed for temporary foreign workers currently employed full-time in Alberta’s tourism and hospitality sector. To be eligible, applicants must have a full-time job offer from an approved Alberta employer in an eligible occupation and meet specific criteria related to employment, language proficiency, education, and work experience.​

Eligibility Requirements

1. Approved Employer and Occupation Requirements

  • Employer Criteria: Your current employer must operate within an eligible industry as defined by the Workers’ Compensation Board (WCB) – Alberta. Additionally, the employer must have valid WCB coverage or be exempt and be a member of an eligible sector association or listed as an Experience Provider on the Travel Alberta website.
  • Eligible Occupations: Your job must fall under one of the eligible occupations listed by the AAIP, which includes roles such as restaurant managers, chefs, cooks, food service supervisors, bartenders, hotel front desk clerks, and tour guides. ​

2. Employment Requirements

  • Current Employment: At the time of application and assessment, you must be living and working in Alberta in an eligible occupation for an approved employer.
  • Work Permit: You must hold a valid work permit based on a positive Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) for an eligible occupation. ​

3. Work Experience

  • You must have completed a minimum of 6 consecutive months (at least 780 hours) of full-time, paid work experience with your current employer in the same eligible occupation. This experience must be authorized by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and obtained while holding valid temporary resident status. ​

4. Language Proficiency

  • For occupations under NOC TEER categories 4 or 5, a minimum CLB score of 4 is required.
  • For occupations under NOC TEER categories 0, 1, 2, or 3, a minimum CLB score of 5 is required.

5. Education

  • You must have completed a minimum of high school education equivalent to Canadian standards. If your education was completed outside Canada, an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) is required to verify its equivalency.

6. Job Offer

  • A valid, full-time, non-seasonal job offer or employment contract from your current employer in Alberta is mandatory. The job offer must be for an eligible occupation and meet wage and benefit standards as outlined in the LMIA or the lowest starting wage for your occupation across all industries in Alberta.
